Mwaluganje Elephant Tented Camp
|

|
LOCATION:
Set in the
heart of the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary, in the
Mwaluganje Hills and a 45 km drive from Mombasa, Kenya's
city seaport and Coast capital, the camp is set along the
shoulder of a low hill facing a traditional elephant
trail, allowing guests to watch the elephants from the
comfort of their well-appointed luxury tents.
Accommodation And More
-
The camp, with all the comforts one
would expect from a four star hotel, consists of 20 twin
bedded tents (there is provision for an extra bed), each
tent with its private timber verandah, shower with hot
and cold water, toilet and wash hand basin. The tents
are comfortably furnished to a very high standard. There
is a private power supply, 220/240 V.
-
It is the only tented camp in this
new sanctuary, and guests have the entire 6,000 acres to
themselves. The bird life is prolific and amazingly
varied and birdwatchers will find the camp area and
sanctuary full of interest.
-
The days may be hot, reaching 28
degrees centigrade (approx. 85 degrees Fahrenheit) but
the evenings are welcomingly cool. The conventional
rainy seasons are May and June and October and November
and the climate may best be described as tropical and
fairly humid.
Activities
and Relaxation
-
The sanctuary is close to the South
Coast beach resorts and offers virtually guaranteed
sightings of large numbers of elephants, in perfect
safety. Professionally, escorted game drives take guests
through forest and bush, where a variety of animals may
be watched and photographed. Among the many animals that
reside in the sanctuary, which is not fenced, so that
wild animals live natural, free lives as much as they
have done for centuries, are zebra, bushbuck, warthog,
Colobus and Sykes' monkeys and, with luck, leopard.
-
The traditional African evening
campfire is the highlight of the day, after an
enthralling game drive. Over a cocktail or cool drink,
it is a time to recall the marvels of Africa's nature,
and to wonder at the majesty and dignity of the stars of
the show of elephants.
-
Round off the day with a superbly
cooked meal under the stars, with the background music -
the hoot of an owl, the yelp of a jackal, the trumpeting
of an elephant and occasionally the cough of a distant
leopard. For entertainment, local Digo and Durama
dancers occasionally perform.
-
As a conservation area for elephants,
Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary is a shining example of a
private conservation campaign to preserve the African
elephant, which suffered enormous population losses over
two decades. A magnificent and unique animal, Mwaluganje
offers unrivalled opportunities to observe them at close
quarters.
